Meridia
Information
The Meridia information that
Meridia manufacturer released upon marketing the
drug was that overweight consumers should not
associate Meridia with the recently recalled diet
drug fen phen. Fen phen was associated to a high
number of deaths and severe injuries and Abbott
wanted to distinguish their new product by preemptively
differentiating the Meridia information from its’
preceding diet pill. Recent reports show that
Abbott’s effort may have been unnecessary
because despite any Meridia information showing
risk of serious side effects, Meridia sales soared.
There has been a lot of Meridia
information showing the opposition to the drug’s
existence on the market. The FDA’s own advisory
committee voted 5-4 against the approval of Meridia
one year prior to its approval because they felt
available Meridia information showed there were
still a lot of safety concerns. Meridia was still
approved and the Public Citizen petitioned the
FDA in March 2002 for the immediate ban of Meridia
from the market in response to Meridia information
showing there were reports of death and serious
side effects with the diet drug users.
