Meridia
Death
There have been at least 29 U.S.
reported Meridia deaths. Even after the high number
of fen phen deaths, as well as costly litigation
dieters sought Meridia prescriptions despite the
hesitation the FDA advisory committee displayed
when voting against the FDA approving Meridia
due to potential Meridia side effects that could
result in Meridia death. A problematic trend with
the introduction of weight loss drugs is that
they were not initially created for dieters looking
for a quick fix due to the potential of Meridia
death that might occur, as well as other adverse
effects.
As the number of overweight Americans
increases every year, finding a safe and effective
weight loss pill has become one of the most potentially
financially rewarding ventures. Possibility of
suffering a sever Meridia side effect including
Meridia death did not hurt Abbott Laboratories’
sales of Meridia, with an estimated 8.5 million
people having used Meridia so far. The Public
Citizen thinks that Abbott Laboratories should
face criminal charges for withholding information
regarding a Meridia death and submitting inaccurate,
unsupported, or incomplete information regarding
seven other Meridia deaths, which is illegal.
